Ford Bronco Sport Becomes First Vehicle To Feature Parts Made of 100% Recycled Ocean Plastic

We have about 5.25 trillion macro and micro pieces of plastic in our oceans right now. Each year, 13 million metric tons are added. There are efforts to remove this plastic to prevent further contamination and pollution, but utilizing this plastic to manufacture certain items is ideal. Ford has found a way to utilize ocean plastic in the construction of their Bronco model. The Bronco will utilize plastic harness clips in the vehicle's second row, connecting to a series of wiring harnesses hidden behind the interior panel.

Ford opted to use this recycled ocean plastic not only as a way to save our planet, but the end product is stronger and more durable than anything else they were able to come up with. Using recycled materials is much more cost-effective as well. The majority of the plastic used in the manufacture of these harness clips will come from discarded fishing nets in the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea. DSM Engineering Materials will perform the collection. They will also assist with the cleaning and processing of the plastic into small, usable pellets. Hellermann Tyton will assist with molding the plastic pellets into the Bronco parts. Ford is also working diligently to construct other plastic parts for their other vehicles.
